Dit jaar waren de Grammys extra bijzonder. Allereerst waren de Grammys 2023 de 65e editie van de muzikale prijsuitreiking. Maar dit jaar werd ook een record gebroken: Beyoncé heeft nu officieel de meeste Grammys ooit gewonnen. Maar ze was niet de enige grote winnaar van de avond.
Tot voor kort stond het record van meeste Grammy-winsten ooit op naam van George Solti, een dirigent die maar liefst 31 Grammys op zijn naam had staan. Twintig jaar lang hield hij dat record, weet de BBC. Tot nu dus, want Beyoncé won dit weekend haar 32e Grammy. De prijs kreeg ze voor este dance/electronic album, dat Renaissance heet.
Overigens was dit niet haar enige prijs van de avond. Uiteindelijk won Beyoncé maar liefst vier Grammys, wat haar een van de grote winnaars van de avond maakt. Ze won ook de prijs voor beste dance/electronic recording, met het nummer Break My Soul, de categorie ‘beste traditionele R&B-optreden’ met Plastic Off the Sofa, en in de categorie ‘beste R&B-nummer’ met Cuff It.
Beyoncé had ook in diverse andere categorieën nominaties, waaronder de categorie ‘Album of the Year’. Maar die prijs won ze niet: Harry Styles kreeg hem voor zijn album Harry’s House. Daarmee is het nu de vierde keer dat Beyoncé voor de prijs genomineerd is, maar ze won hem nog niet.
De eerste keer
Bij de Grammys 2023 kregen ook een aantal artiesten voor het eerst een prijs in handen, zo weet Time. Viola Davis – een actrice bekend van onder meer How to Get Away With Murder – won een Grammy voor de categorie ‘best audiobook, narration & storytelling’. Dat was extra bijzonder, omdat zij nog maar de derde zwarte vrouw ooit is met die prijs.
Verder won de Nigeriaanse artiest Tems haar eerste prijs voor WAIT FOR U, dat de prijs won voor beste melodische rap-optreden. En tot slot won Kim Petras de prijs ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’, waarmee ze de eerste open transgendervrouw is die deze prijs won. Ze won de prijs voor haar optreden Unholy, dat ze samen met Sam Smith deed.

Tot slot was er een hoogtepunt met de viering van 50 jaar hiphop. Daarvoor bracht de Recording Academy diverse grote namen uit het genre bij elkaar, die vervolgens samen een medley opvoerden tijdens de uitreiking. Artiesten als Run DMC, LL Cool J, Dj Jazzy Jeff, Salt-n-Pepa, Flava Flav, Ice-T, Queen Latifah, Method Man, Big Boi, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes en GloRilla verschenen op het podium, en kregen allemaal de tijd om een stukje van hun meest bekende nummers op te voeren. Opvallend was wel dat bekende vrouwen als Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj en Eve niet bij het optreden zaten.
