Het afgelopen weekend stond in het teken van de 66e editie van de Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, die weer met allerlei verrassende momenten kwam. Dit jaar wisten vooral vrouwen veel van de prijzen binnen te slepen. Zo won Miley Cyrus de felbegeerde prijs voor het eerst en brak Taylor Swift een waar record als het om de Grammy’s gaat. Dit heb je allemaal gemist.
Om eens bij het goede nieuws te beginnen: Taylor Swift en haar record. De artiest won dit jaar de prijs voor het beste album, namelijk voor Midnights. Daarmee is het de vierde keer dat ze deze prijs wint en is ze de eerste artiest ooit die de prijs zo vaak in ontvangst mocht nemen. Wel zijn er meer mensen die de prijs voor beste album drie keer wonnen, namelijk Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon en Stevie Wonder. Taylor won de prijs eerder met haar albums Fearless in 2010, 1989 in 2016 en Folklore in 2021. En ze werd zelfs nog vaker genomineerd voor de prijs, maar met album Red in 2024 en Evermore in 2022 wist ze de nominatie niet te verzilveren.
Overigens kwam Taylor ook zelf nog met interessant nieuws. Nadat ze een Grammy in ontvangst mocht nemen voor ‘best pop vocal album’ kondigde ze haar nieuwe album aan. Op 19 april verschijnt The Tortured Poets Department.
Veel Grammy’s voor vrouwen
Taylor Swift was natuurlijk niet de enige winnaar van de avond. Ze was niet eens de enige vrouwelijke winnaar. Die hadden we dit jaar namelijk veel. De vier belangrijkste prijzen gingen zelfs allemaal naar vrouwen. Billie Eilish won de prijs voor het beste nummer van het jaar, met haar liedje What Was I Made For?. Victoria Monét kreeg een beeldje voor beste nieuwe artiest en Miley Cyrus won ‘best record’ met Flowers. Taylor Swift nam dus de vierde grootste prijs in ontvangst, met haar beste album.
En er waren meer dames die het podium mochten beklimmen. Karol G won volgens Variety haar eerste Grammy voor ‘best música urbana’ met Mañana Será Bonito. Lainey Wilson kreeg ook haar eerste Grammy ooit: haar album Bell Bottom Country won beste country-album. En ook won SZA voor het eerst Grammy’s als solo-artiest. SZA kreeg er zelfs vier, waaronder voor beste R&B-nummer en beste progressieve R&B-album.
Wonnen er dan helemaal geen mannen? Jawel! Jay-Z kreeg dit jaar de Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. Opvallend is overigens dat juist Jay-Z in zijn speech een pleidooi maakte voor zijn vrouw Beyoncé. Zij won namelijk nog nooit de prijs voor beste album van het jaar, terwijl ze vorig jaar het record neerzette voor meest gewonnen Grammy’s ooit. “Dus zelfs voor jullie standaarden klopt dat niet”, aldus Jay-Z.
Verrassing van Celine Dion en arrestatie
De avond zat natuurlijk ook weer boordenvol verrassingen, waaronder van Celine Dion. Zij verscheen aan het einde van de ceremonie om de allerlaatste prijs uit te reiken. Bijzonder, omdat ze in december 2022 bekendmaakte dat ze het zeldzame ‘stiff-person syndrome’ heeft, wat je brein en ruggengraat aantast. Logischerwijs kreeg ze een enorme staande ovatie van het publiek. Ook leuk: Taylor Swift zong mee met The Power of Love terwijl Dion het podium opkwam, waarna Dion de prijs voor beste album weer aan Taylor Swift mocht uitreiken.
Helaas eindigde de avond niet voor iedereen even leuk. De rapper Killer Mike werd achter de schermen aangehouden en geboeid afgevoerd, nadat hij drie Grammy’s had gewonnen, meldt het AD. De artiest werd blijkbaar verdacht als betrokkene van een handgemeen. Hij zou een beveiliger omver hebben geduwd, omdat diegene niet snel genoeg opzij ging voor de rapper. Inmiddels is hij weer vrijgelaten.
